Gambetti at the academic inauguration of the School of Arts and Crafts

On April 19, the academic inauguration of the School of Arts and Crafts at St. Peter’s Factory, promoted in collaboration with the Fratelli tutti Foundation, took place.

The evening was moderated by Antonio Preziosi, director of Rai Parlamento, and introduced by H.E. Card. Mauro Gambetti, President of the Fabbrica di San Pietro and the Fratelli tutti Foundation, with institutional greetings by the Minister of Culture, Hon. Gennaro Sangiuliano.

The lectio magistralis was given by Mario Cucinella, architect, designer and academic, founder of MCA – Mario Cucinella Architects, who spoke to the students and guests in attendance about “Digital artisans of architecture and design. Thinking with your hands.”

Dr. Assunta Di Sante, scientific head of the School, and Prof. Nicoletta Marconi (University of Rome Tor Vergata), professor and scientific advisor, also spoke at the opening.

The conclusions were by Fr. Francesco Occhetta, General Secretary of the Fratelli tutti Foundation and director of the School of Arts and Crafts.

Greeting from Card. Mauro Gambetti

Dear Eminences and Excellencies,

Distinguished Ministers and representatives of Parliament, Regions and the Municipality of Rome,

distinguished Ambassadors,

distinguished Rectors and Rectors,

representatives of professional orders and associations,

religious and civil authorities all;

dear professors of the School of Arts and Crafts, dear sanpietrini,

and finally you, dear students, with your families, friends all:

it is a joy to welcome you here, on the threshold of this house, which is St. Peter’s Basilica. A house open to all, which is cared for every day, together with the Canons, by our sanpietrini and all the staff of the Fabbrica di San Pietro, whom you see here. The Vatican Basilica is, for the past few months, also a home for 20 young people.

An educational community

It is nice to see these children and their teachers together, because in these months a real community of education has been born.

Dear students, your teachers – the first and foremost the Pietrini who accompany you – are enthusiastic about you. They would like you to be here with them. And what we would like to tell you today is that you are really precious to us. This precious heritage of relationships, encounters, knowledge, is the treasure of education to be cherished and grown because it is first of all the experience, time and enthusiasm that we have shared.

School of Arts and Crafts as enhancement of the human

For this reason – perhaps it is a first result of the path we have embarked on – we have refounded, from this year, the School of Arts and Crafts of the Fabbrica di San Pietro, thanks to the collaboration of the Fondazione Fratelli tutti. This school existed at the Reverend Fabbrica in the eighteenth century as a laboratory for the transmission of skills that have been handed down in this place over the centuries.

We have drawn on the tradition trying to develop an anthropological model: that of intelligent through working and operating with intelligence.

A pedagogy that marries the integrality of education for a growth of the person in all spheres of the human: bodily, intellectual, but also relational and spiritual.

For this we asked the arch. Cucinella, who I greet and thank you already, to offer us his lectio magistralis on “thinking with your hands”.

I also thank the director Antonio Preziosi, who will moderate this moment of inauguration.

Relational growth: generations and communities

I was talking about a model of relational growth.

The first relationship that animates the School is the intergenerational one, of the transmission of knowledge. Pope Francis has told us a lot about the importance of the alliance between generations. In the encyclical Fratelli Tutti we read that between selfish indifference and violent protest there is always a possible option: dialogue. Above all, that between ages and different knowledge. A community, in fact, grows only when its different souls are put into communication.

The other fundamental relationship is that of social friendship, of building community. The School has chosen a model in all round, as I said, which aims to grow the relationships between students as a community itself and between students and the holy stones, teachers and educators who accompany them.

Spiritual growth

But the School is also a place of interior vocation, to foster a growth of the spiritual dimension of the person through immersion in beauty, which is an expression of spiritual values, feelings, history and encounters. Also the proposal of spaces for silence and dialogue and confrontation on issues that touch the humanity of each is an instrument to promote this pro-vocation of interiority.

Building fraternal relations

And it is in a context of communion and fraternity that the human, the capacity of women and men to cooperate with fruit and to bring about themselves develops. Where there is no such thing, we are stuck – I would say daily – in dead ends and only develop technology or profit. We get lost in individual and individualistic grooves but we do not keep the whole of personal being and social being. In this way one does not make a real contribution to society and personally becomes incorrigible. The human person, we are convinced, instead, that it must flourish in all its beauty and in all its dimensions.

I conclude with a wish: that from here comes a contribution to the development of education in the multiple areas of growth. This is possible only if, together, all of us look beyond the particularisms towards a horizon of fraternity. It is the experience we have among ourselves, as promoters, cooperators and supporters of the school. Working together, making up the mosaic of personal, professional, vocational and institutional differences, is the horizon of society as a whole. For this I thank especially the minister of culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, who will intervene to bring his greeting. I hope that our activity, marked by the encyclical of the Holy Father Fratelli Tutti, lights a light on the human horizon in which we conceive the educational systems and the relationship between spiritual growth and professional achievement.

I wish you all a good listening and to you, boys, I wish you a good journey together.

[215,212,241
