VATICAN, NOV 11 – Below is the speech of H.E. Card. Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, president of the Fabbrica di San Pietro and the Fratelli tutti Foundation at the press conference presenting the Microsoft project “St. Peter’s Basilica: AI-Enhanced Experience.”

St. Peter’s Basilica is like the starry sky on a summer night: you remain enchanted by its splendor, its munificence.

However, it risks being a mute witness to the “infinite beauty” if the intelligence is not enriched with knowledge and the heart’s aspiration is not nourished by a spiritual experience.

It takes an astrolabe, a spyglass and a telescope to know the stars; and it takes a spacecraft to penetrate the starry sky. Such an experience can change your outlook. Nasa Administrator Bill Nelson was able to look at the world from the window of the space shuttle in 1986. Recently he said: “I didn’t see racial divisions, I didn’t see religious divisions, I didn’t see political divisions. I saw this beautiful Earth, where we are all citizens of the planet Earth”.

That is why, three years ago, the Fabbrica di San Pietro began to think about an “astronomical observatory” and a “spacecraft” for the Basilica. As such, we chose information technology as an opportunity for mission development. And today we have come to define a coordinated plan of services and communication activities for an “outgoing Basilica.”

In recent years, not without effort, we have faced the splendid challenge of the relationship between man and technology with the spirit of fraternity, which has animated important collaborations marked by circularity, of skills, points of view and means, with the common goal of fostering the human growth of people.

Thus, we were able to structure an information system of the Factory, put an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) at the service of the Offices and start the process of computerization of document, archival and human resources management; in addition, we implemented the first step of Building Information Modeling (BIM) of the Basilica.

Then, platforms and apps have been created to offer services to pilgrims and visitors in order to facilitate their experience in St. Peter’s; and the meanings guarded by the monumental complex have been made more understandable – through multimedia languages, the use of Artificial Intelligence and the proposal of training courses. In this sense, the effort is to decode for today’s man, with the help of digital technology, the interweaving of history, art and spirituality that make the Basilica unique in the world.

After all, the Church has always been doing this, trying to communicate its faith in the divine through the languages of the time and cultural context to which it belongs. Next November 25 we will present the Basilica’s communication plan with the Piazza San Pietro magazine edited by Father Enzo Fortunato.

Today we are presenting the Basilica’s new web portal – created thanks to the generous collaboration of Assist Group – and St. Peter’s Basilica brought into virtual space through a virtuous marriage of technology and humanism, thanks to the gift that Microsoft has given us. The two creations, the institutional portal and the virtual Basilica, are one the flagship and the other the flagship of the “digital mission” of the Fabbrica di San Pietro.

I briefly introduce the eyelet. The Basilica portal is a true ecosystem, within which various technologies converge: an integrated, open-architecture, scalable Mobile First platform that anyone can access.

In the metaphor of the starry sky, the portal represents the astronomical observatory. First of all, you will find there the astrolabe, capable of indicating the flow situation in real time, suggesting visit routes, inspiring the spiritual path through the proposal of specific itineraries and encouraging the choice of visits at favorable times and days. A kind of orientation map is offered, with an access booking platform, a service app and digital audio guides.

Then, the visitor is offered the use of a spyglass to get closer to the life of the Basilica: information and news, documentation and narratives, video and audio will be online. The spyglass will show historical-artistic and spiritual content, use AI for in-depth insights, be able to zoom in on the historical archive, open “medallions” on news, make the new “St. Peter’s Square” Magazine accessible, etc.

Last, as a feather in the cap, a telescope will be available, a powerful tool capable of penetrating into hidden meanings and putting one in touch with interiority. It will offer a 3D photogrammetric view of the Basilica, some immersive itineraries, an educational program modulated on the Minecraft model, streaming of celebrations, podcasts with meditations, etc. The purpose of the telescope, which with Dr. Brad Smith we have shared since the beginning of our first meeting in front of Michelangelo’s Pieta two years ago, is the unveiling of the inspiration underlying beauty, which, according to Von Balthasar, is deputed to “crown, as a halo of elusive splendor, the twofold star of the true and the good and their indissoluble relationship.”

The digital ecosystem, which will be usable from Dec. 1, is a container that systematizes technologies, streamlines and simplifies activities, and can help each pilgrim “experience” the Basilica in its spiritual essence.

The portal is meant to accompany the visitor to the threshold of the ship that will lead him to a spiritual experience. The pilgrim will be able to board the ship of the Church led by Christ, whose boatswain is Peter with his successor Francis, and its sailors are the people who can be met in the Basilica, either directly (priests, samplers, accredited guides, pilgrims…) or through the channels made available in the digital sphere.

If people entering the Basilica in any way will have sensed the Mystery that inspired and radiates it, our mission will have been accomplished.

[212
