Below is the text of the press release from the St. Peter’s Basilica press conference on Wednesday, Nov. 25:

VATICAN CITY, NOV. 25 – St. Peter’s Basilica is preparing to embark on a new path of communication, focusing on innovation in the digital age, for an increasingly inclusive Church in dialogue with the contemporary world. Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, archpriest of the Basilica and president of the Fabbrica di San Pietro, and Father Enzo Fortunato, director of St. Peter’s Basilica Communications, presented the five-action strategy.

The dedicated font, designed to celebrate the beauty of St. Peter’s Basilica and the religious, historical, artistic and cultural heritage it represents.

Designed by the Studiogusto team as a communication tool, the font will become a hallmark of the Basilica, reinforcing the role that this physical and spiritual place plays as a guardian of millennia-old traditions and as a promoter of innovation.

The official launch, scheduled for 2025, will unveil a specially designed typography designed to accompany all forms of communication in the Basilica, placing itself at the service of the dialogue between past and future, between classicism and modernity. Optimized to ensure clear readability on print and digital media, the font will characterize the Basilica’s new website with a new look and constantly updated content, like the new print magazine.

“St. Peter’s Square,” whose name was chosen by Pope Francis (from among several proposed), will offer prominent editorials on Church and World issues. The monthly magazine will address current topics, with a focus on social problems such as poverty, immigration, violence and the challenges facing families and the excluded. Pope Francis will respond personally to readers, a letter for each issue, reconfirming his willingness to listen and dialogue.

The logo of the magazine, designed by architect Marco Capasso, is the result of a horizontal sign that alludes to sharing: the square, the agora, and the architectural model that embraces it designed for relationship, becomes an evocative sign. Bernini’s colonnade represents the embrace with the community, and the text columns of the magazine “St. Peter’s Square” constitute a new cultural dimension ready to measure itself against the challenges of contemporaneity. The magazine will be available at the Official Area of St. Peter’s Basilica or inside the Basilica itself, or by postal subscription. Agreements are underway to distribute the magazine in schools and at waiting rooms in train stations and airports. People who wish to receive the monthly magazine and do not have the opportunity to purchase it will receive it free of charge.

Social media presence. The Basilica will use social media to share its love for this sacred place, and offer useful information in view of the upcoming Jubilee. The language and strategies adopted on social media will be aimed at creating meaningful connections between the Basilica and Christians around the world. An always open door.

A webcam, installed on St. Peter’s tomb, will allow virtual recollection for the faithful from around the world to send their prayers. The device will be inaugurated next Dec. 2 by Pope Francis (6:30 p.m.). Another webcam, on the other hand, will be installed on the Holy Door to allow those who cannot make the “holy journey” to symbolically cross it.

A multi-purpose room inside the Fabric of St. Peter’s will allow the reception of journalists and information workers.

Read H.E.
