Under the shadow of the Cupolone, the Scuola delle Arti e dei Mestieri (School of Arts and Crafts) of the Fabric of saint Peter is born in collaboration with the Fratelli tutti Foundation.

The courses will start in January 2023 and will last six months with compulsory attendance in person. For the first year, the three scheduled courses are addressed to stonemasons and marble masons, plasterers and decorators, and carpenters.

The teaching staff consists of university professors from various Italian universities, the staff of the Fabric of saint Peter’s Technical Office and experienced craftsmen. The training activity includes cycles of face-to-face lectures, seminars, guided tours and study visits. In particular, workshop courses will be held in the workshops of the Fabric of saint Peter, where the would-be craftsmen will have the opportunity to practice and work in close contact with the craftsmen of Saint Peter’s. Through this form of active apprenticeship and generational transmission of knowledge, the students will be able to immerse themselves in the life of the Vatican Basilica, to get to know its places, people and organisation.

Applications must be received by 31st October 2022. For the first year, there will be 20 students, both Italian and foreign (knowledge of Italian language level B2 required), aged between 18 and 25. In this way, the number of students per class will be such as to guarantee a personalised attention for the best possible workshop lessons.

Attendance in person is required; at least 75% of the scheduled course hours must be attended in person, and a Certificate of Acquired Skills will be issued after the final examination.

Applicants are expected to hold a technical institute diploma (with reference to CAT courses), a professional institute diploma (with reference to Maintenance courses), a diploma in arts or a foreign qualification equivalent to the Italian one. The courses are also open to university students if they meet the requirements.

Candidates must pass a selection test consisting of a test and a tele-interview to check soft skills and assess their motivation. However, you can write to a scuola.artiemestieri@fsp.va to register, receive information and explanations.

When in the world one hears about St. Peter’s one often thinks of the Vatican Basilica, the most imposing and famous in the world, but one hardly ever remembers the man to whom it is dedicated. The video mapping project starts from here, from the figure of Simon, whose name Christ even changed, and intends to answer some simple questions: who was he? What do we know about him? The chosen scenes narrate in the first person the highlights of the apostle Peter’s life: the call, the following, the mission, the martyrdom. The façade of the Basilica, in addition to being one of the most evocative screens in the world for this narrative project, is designed as an integral part of the story to celebrate the Apostle’s testimony at the altar of Confession.

The faithful, pilgrims and visitors from all over the world can enter into dialogue with the humanity of the Apostle and delve into the depths of the spiritual experience by retracing the main steps of the extraordinary life of the fisherman of Galilee – the ups and downs, the tenacity and the doubts, the tears and the gift of life – thus having the opportunity to recognise and identify themselves in his life experience. In the sequence of images, objects belonging to the daily toil and labour, such as the net and the boat, are proposed as symbols of the Church and Christian life. The moments chosen are part of an accomplished vocation, that of Peter, cherished within a greater love that continues to ask men and women of all times: “Do you love me?”. In the Paschal perspective that emerges from Peter’s experience, even doubts and betrayals are the condition to meet, love and serve the Lord and their brothers and sisters.

The meeting "At the margins of society" will take place on 17 September at the Aula Nuova of the Synod in the Vatican, the second of three events planned for 2022 in the run-up to the Jubilee 2025, organised by the Fratelli tutti Foundation.

After the symposium "Leaning into life", held last 18 June, the Foundation once again puts the themes of proximity and care at the centre of its spiritual dialogues with a meeting that hinges on the teachings of the encyclical Fratelli tutti.

An anthropological reading of the experience of infirmity and care enlightened by the Christian mystery. The symposium “Leaning into life”, the first of three meetings in the run-up to the Jubilee of 2025, has just come to an end in the Aula Nuova of the Synod at the Vatican.

The meeting, moderated by Father Francesco Occhetta, Secretary General of the Fratelli tutti Foundation, consisted of a plenary listening session, a group session to share participants’ experiences, and a spiritual itinerary in St. Peter’s Basilica during sunset.

Participants had the opportunity to share their experiences of suffering and infirmity, loneliness and care in several contexts and to share their stories of commitment to the most fragile people in facilities, associations or organizations.

This first stage of the approach to the Jubilee experience precedes two other very important appointments.

The first meeting “On the margins of society”, will take place on 17 September 2022 and will consist of a reading, between rhetoric and realism, in pursuit of processes founded on an ethic based on the recognition of universal human rights and the Gospel message. The second meeting, to be held on 3 December 2022, is entitled “Recognising oneself on the threshold of education”. The themes include the vulnerability of humankind, universal solidarity and world-wide responsibility.

The Jubilee meetings in St. Peter’s Basilica will accompany the Jubilee Committee’s proposals to allow a human and spiritual experience for all people of goodwill who identify with the teachings of the Encyclical Fratelli tutti.
