“Fraternity is not something for priests. It is what we administrators do every day.”

  • Mayors, aldermen, city councilors since January have a tool that is not only symbolic and contains great civic sense: an Agenda to be voted on all together to promote dialogue and alliance among citizens.

Discuss it, amend it, add your proposals to it. The important thing is that municipalities, the institution closest to citizens, talk about it. Attached you will find the basic text of the Agenda and the report of the presentation in Rome with Naples Mayor and Anci President, Gaetano Manfredi and Fratelli tutti Foundation President, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti.

The sentence you find at the beginning is from the mayor of Edolo (BS) Luca Masneri, coordinator for the Fratelli tutti Foundation of the Administrators’ Working Table. The Foundation and Anci (the National Association of Italian Municipalities) signed an agreement to promote fraternity and drafted the basic text for municipal councils. There is not only the declaration of principle but concrete proposals to build the common good.

The profound meaning of this gesture and its relevance in this difficult time can be found in the Odg itself, from a quote by the Mayor of Florence Giorgio La Pira.

La Pira “had envisioned the protagonism of cities to promote social peace and nurture international dialogue to stem the power of war, anticipating, on the one hand, the ‘pillars’ of human fraternity and social friendship, and, on the other, such crucial concepts today as ecological sustainability and a new integral humanism. He envisioned a system of “bridges” between the world’s cities to create opportunities for unity and dialogue by hoping for lasting peace among peoples and different religions (Pope Francis, Social Week of Catholics, July 7, 2024, Trieste).

His example still represents a “prophetic model” for contemporary politicians, inspiring them to address local and global challenges with an approach capable of integrating multiple ecological dimensions – social, economic, cultural and environmental, harmonizing sustainable development and social justice.”
