Both Pope Benedict and Pope Francis have called for the de-pollution of the air we breathe, an issue that has much to do with the information system, especially at a time when it is experiencing an objective and epochal industrial crisis. In fact, for twenty years now, the sales of paper newspapers have been falling, with the consequent difficulties for the industries that provide information and a cascade of extreme contractual and political weakness on the part of those who produce the information: journalists and editors. On the one hand, this is a positive consequence, because the power has now shifted to the reader, who has access to unlimited information; on the other hand, it is a negative consequence, because it takes away our strength in the face of market interference – such as advertising – and political pressure. And this remains a major democratic issue, because information is the only guarantee of control in democratic systems.
