All wars humiliate and destroy human dignity and “by their very nature do not serve to solve problems, but rather to exacerbate them”. With these words, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin opened the “Round Table on Peace”, which brought together some thirty Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. “God”, said Parolin, “created man to live in peace and to protect creation, not to destroy it”, pointing out that war “threatens not only the dignity of others, but also one’s own”. According to the Secretary of State, today the concept of “just war”, “born in an era when conflicts were relatively limited in scope, must be questioned”. In today’s world, with the advent of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction, this theory is highly problematic”. The cardinal went on to mention the three areas of commitment identified by Pope Francis to begin sowing the seeds of peace: eradicating the causes of injustice, settling unjust and unpayable debts, and feeding the hungry. The Nobel laureates and international organisations then drafted and signed a document called the “Peace Declaration”.
