I choose to meet the Lord.
I concentrate and go beyond my worries and thoughts.
I make a sign of the cross and inwardly express my desire to be in His presence.
When John the Baptist heard in prison of the works of the Christ, he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” Jesus said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.”
As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces. Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you. Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”
John is in prison and his faith is assailed by a harsh disquiet, a terrible doubt. Even the faith of a man so great and so close to Christ can experience an unexpected and difficult crisis. Yes, that is exactly how it is. It is very difficult when suddenly what was earlier so firm and so vital in us, such as faith in God, seems to collapse.
Evil often operates in these cracks, in these ‘crises’. But John, in his inner disorientation, chooses a very precise path: he decides to question the Lord directly.
Love in the end is also this. It is embracing each other in doubt, looking at each other in fear, defending each other in misunderstanding.
John decides to stare into the face of God and question him about the fears that dwell in his heart.
John chooses the truth. He places himself heart to heart before God, without feeling ashamed, humbling himself.
And he finds his Lord, he finds his faith.
It is this courage of truth that makes John laudable.
In this third week of Advent, let us direct our gaze towards God and open the doors of our hearts to Him, without shame, with all the true emotions that dwell within.
God is waiting for us.
I visualise the scene by trying to imagine the location, characters, dialogue, tone and gestures.
I let my feelings emerge, what strikes me most, the emotions I feel.
I accept my feelings, without censorship, without judgement.
As if I were addressing a friend, I speak to the Lord and with a feeling of gratitude express to him what I feel I am receiving from him at this moment.
I recite an Our Father to greet him and leave the prayer.

Quanta dolcezza racchiusa in queste poche parole.
Come è possibile credere, amare e dubitare?
