I choose to meet the Lord.
I concentrate and go beyond my worries and thoughts.
I make a sign of the cross and inwardly express my desire to be in His presence.
Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him. After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
There is a thin thread that links the birth of Jesus to today’s Gospel. Thirty years pass in which Jesus lives a normal life within a seemingly ordinary family. Until today, almost everything seems normal in his life.
Indeed, Jesus’ desire to be baptised surprises even John the Baptist, his cousin. He, who is the direct substance of the Father, without sin, wants to immerse himself in the river. Why?
For today something changes in the life of Jesus. He has reached adulthood and the time has come to take full responsibility for his life. Only today, the Son of God is ready to give form to his call, and he does so with the same ritual with which the first Christians choose the way of the Lord and say their ‘yes’.
Jesus is now ready to separate himself from his closest affections in order to individualise himself as a man, to express his identity, to realise God’s will in his own life and embrace his mission. Jesus is the Son of a God who again, as at his birth, makes himself humble amongst the needy, and food for the hungry. On the very day when he begins his public life, Jesus decides to make himself a pilgrim amongst pilgrims. Before becoming Master, before being the one who will show the way, he wants to be the one who immerses himself in the road, in the dust of the pavements of sinners, of the those distant and lost.
Today, God incarnates Himself anew in the life of humanity, making Himself close and near.
Becoming a man amongst men with the desire to make their humanity flourish is what makes him a
credible God.
I visualise the scene by trying to imagine the location, characters, dialogue, tone and gestures.
I let my feelings emerge, what strikes me most, the emotions I feel.
I accept my feelings, without censorship, without judgement.
The mission to which God calls us is linked to our history. It all starts with who we are, with our shortcomings, the wounds we have experienced, but also the gifts and skills we have developed. What gift, talent, skill do I recognise?
Like Jesus, do I feel ready to embrace my mission today?
What emotion do I feel when I realise that God, through Jesus, has incarnated himself in my history to make himself close and near to me? To show me the way as a loving and merciful Father?
As if I were addressing a friend, I speak to the Lord and with a feeling of gratitude express to him what I feel I am receiving from him at this moment.
I recite an Our Father to greet him and leave the prayer.

Quanta dolcezza racchiusa in queste poche parole.
Come è possibile credere, amare e dubitare?
